The premise
Three years ago the Sunderer broke the Marrowgate, and Rowen Vasque's mother died under a fallen house. One season ago, at the Midring breach, Rowen woke thirteen meters tall in a ruin of their own making. Now, chained before Deepholm's tribunal, one road remains: ride into the Grey Waste with the 57th, to a vault Rowen's vanished father sealed beneath the dead ring — and the Waste between is not empty.

How it opens
The tribunal chamber sits so deep in Deepholm that the black lake sweats through its walls. Lamplight, wet stone, the smell of cold iron. Your chains run to a floor ring; you have learned their length exactly. From the bench, the magistrate reads the charges in a clerk's flat voice: the Marrowgate night. The Midring breach. Sixty-one dead in the ruin you made with hands that were not quite yours. On the evidence table your father's key lies on its cord, still smoking. Commander Ashkell stands at the rail, unreadable as weather. Captain Sorrel Vane waits nearer than anyone, blade bare and low, like something she has carried since childhood. …
