Knock Once for Yes

~17 turns4 endings

The premise

Buffalo, 1907. A grieving widow has hired you — a retired stage-conjurer — to sit at her séance and catch the celebrated Madame Sabine cheating. You know every trick, and you catch this one in three minutes. Then the "spirit" starts naming things no stranger could know, and you understand that someone at this candlelit table is feeding her the family's secrets.

Four endings to reach — where the thread leads is yours to decide.

How it opens

The curtains are nailed against the lake. Five candles burn in a branch at the center of the round table, and around it five faces wait for you to be impressed: Honoria Vane, her son's photograph turned face-down under her hand; Roland, her brother-in-law, watching the room like a man counting the exits; sharp Cordelia, who named this a circus at the door; the governess Miss Pruitt, eyes down; and Madame Sabine, serene, fingers spread on the cloth. "The spirits come to the patient," the medium says, and lets the dark settle. Then a single rap sounds from beneath the table — yes — and your trained ear places the confederate's foot against the table leg before the echo dies. …

The story picks up from here — start a save and it answers to you.
