Last Train to Atlanta

~36 turns4 endings

The premise

Daniel Reyes has missed birthdays, school plays, and every train home for eight years. Today he is delivering his daughter to her mother in Atlanta aboard the inaugural run of America's first bullet train — press, champagne, history. The news is calling whatever happened outside Richmond overnight "civil unrest." It is not. And in the last car, behind a bathroom door, a young woman who boarded bleeding has gone very quiet.

Four endings to reach — where the thread leads is yours to decide.

How it opens

Four minutes to departure, and the Aurora gleams down the platform of Union Station like something drawn for the cameras — which she is: crews walking backward filming her nose, executives shaking hands in the aisles. You have the best seats on the first bullet train in American history. Your phone buzzes face-up on the tray — GARVEY, the office, third time since breakfast — and across the little table your daughter watches the platform with her chin on her fist. Lily. Eight years old. Her pink backpack rides on her lap because she wouldn't let the porter touch it; she packed it herself and won't say with what. …
