The premise
Every morning, Nico punches the same tickets, waves to the same fishmonger, and tells everyone today feels like a lucky day. Every morning, the same seagull lands on the same railing at the same second. The Visitors — wristbanded, untouchable — do what they like to Aurora Bay, and the city forgives them by morning. Then a stranger hums a song Nico already knows, and for the first time in his life, he misses his stop.

How it opens
The 6:12 pulls out of Cannery Row with rain on the glass and the same eleven passengers, and you tell the fishmonger what you tell her every morning: today feels like a lucky day. She laughs on the beat she always laughs on.
At the harbor curve a Visitor slouches in the last seat — hood up, a gray band glowing at her wrist — humming. You know the song. You know it the way you know your own hands, though you cannot say where a tram conductor would have learned it, and while you stand there with your hand on the cord, not pulling it, Beacon Street slides past.
