The premise

You came for a free breakfast and a fifty-dollar gift card and sat down for a ninety-minute timeshare pitch. Three hours later you are still in a windowless sales office off a highway-hotel lobby, and the man across the folding table has learned your name and will not stop using it. The price on the sticky note keeps dropping. The pen is right where your hand rests. All you have to do to leave is win.

How it opens

Marco Fiore slides the brochure a half-inch closer, the way you nudge a plate toward a child who is not eating. The coast printed on it is a blue that hurts to look at. "Ellis, I'm not going to sit here and pressure you," he says, warm as a heat lamp. "That is not who we are at Ironwood." Between you, on a yellow sticky note, a number has a line drawn through it and a smaller number written underneath. There is a bowl of soft mints. There is a pen, capped, set precisely where your right hand has rested for three hours. Behind you the mini-fridge ticks; a young woman with a lanyard tops off a paper cup you never touched and does not quite look at you. The lobby sign said ninety minutes. …
